(essential WordPress Plugin) is built around the use of a Focus Keyword. Keep this in mind when you are thinking of your topic. Your post needs to be relevant to the focus keyword always.

A keyword is either a word or a phrase that your audience will use in the search engines to find an article. Most of the time people search using a phrase of 2 or 3 words. Stick to this when creating your title.

Page or Post title should be the main focus/reason for the page/post, highlight and copy this for example if i were to write a post on “Website Design in Ireland”, i would fill in title of the page Website Design in Ireland this will automatically set the slug to the same name, then paste it into the focus keyword. (Pick the main keyword or keyphrase that this post/page is about.) and having done this i would progress to fill in the page with content relative to the focus keywords.

Snippet Preview – this will be what your post title and meta description look like in the search engines. As you modify the title and description in the Yoast SEO box, that will change also.

WordPress SEO creates a snippet preview which should contain most of the relevant content, copy all of this down to the meta description remember to remove the URL information on the second line. Change a few words but not the keyword phrase.

Having your meta description filled in copy the first line and paste it into the SEO Title box just above. Remember to change it slightly, keep the focus on you keyword phrase.

At this stage you have a snippet of code similar to below

Focus keyword usage
Your focus keyword was found in:

  • Article Heading: No
  • Page title: Yes (1)
  • Page URL: (1)
  • Content: Yes (2)
  • Meta description: Yes (1)

Certain fields are numbered which means you have mentioned the Keyword Phrase that amount of times in that specific area. With this done add an image to your post and remember you focus keyword(copy it). Find you biggest block of text and left align the image to the area. Breaking up your page.

Now save your post. and see the result, we are aiming for a green SEO: Good and with good content with a word count of about 300 this should be enough for Yoast WordPress SEO and Google Bots to recognise the post and rank it accordingly.

Write subheading using your Focus Keyword, highlight it, then click the dropdown arrow next to Paragraph and click on Heading 2 heading.  This makes it a sub-heading. Never use H1,  that is a reserved letter size for your page title or your site title, depending on your theme.

Search engines place a lot of weight on the H1 headings if they are only there once. It’s one of the highest page ranking factors. It is your page that ranks, not your site, you want that H1 to tell them what your page is about.

There is more and your can experiment, this is a quick start guide.

Reuse your data/information.

HINT – Get your favorite keyword or what you want to rank for and sign up for Google Alerts for that keyword, its free and helps you see the results of your labor in an email from “the mighty Google”.

HINT – Google pagespeed, currently google are focused on page speed as well as quality content, responsiveness, they have even created a developers platform to assist you with page insights

Visit the link and enter your domain name and press ANALYZE. Keep image sizes between 600 and 800 pixels. Unless your creating a header image and still 1200 pixels is enough. And a responsive search engine friendly theme.

2 days after publishing this walk through, yoast has been updated different look and feel but basically the same functionality.
